Fall 2012 Family Night!

Did you know the number one influence on
high school students is their parents!

Family Nights are held twice a semester.  WHS community members can come meet the Purple & Gold Connections' staff, see what we have been doing and what we have planned. It provides an opportunity for JMU mentors to meet WHS mentees.  All this happens around a light family meal.  There is fun and games for the students and a short informational session for parents.  Special thanks for all who participate.  It really makes a difference for the students when they see their parents and/or family members present.

Summer participants were acknowledged for the extra effort they put into themselves when others when they could have spent this part of the summer doing other things.
Great job students and family members!

The final fall Family Night featured a presentation about SOL Testing.
New JMU Mentors
Spring 2013

Spring 2013 brings a new set of trained JMU Mentors, pictured here with Purple & Gold staff and student interns.  The primary purpose of JMU mentors is to assist matched WHS students with developing and achieving an academic goal and a personal goal for the term.  We never have enough JMU mentors to go around so if a student had a mentor in fall term they may not get one in spring.  JMU mentors meet family members and work with them to help the student achieve their goals.  The JMU mentors encourage WHS students to participate in Purple and Gold activities and will accompany them on these activities.
