Expanding Your Horizons is a math and science conference for young women. Six students and two mentors came to this event. We attended workshops about computer programming, geometry, genetics, the solar system and problem solving. We experimented with a program called Alice where our students created stories on computers. Dr. Crystal Brogan from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville spoke to us about her work at space observatories. Finally, we ended the day with a series of physics demonstrations! We got to see how liquid nitrogen freezes objects and how electricity can break aluminum cans. There was even pyrotechnics!
